Panta rhei—everything flows—is another way of saying that nothing is permanent. It refers to the constant flow of long cycles in nature that move from birth to death, from destruction to reconstruction.
The town of Prattsville, NY, has gone through several cycles of prosperity and decline, devastation and renewal, most recently after the damage caused by Hurricane Irene in 2011. In fact, the Prattsville Art Center and Residency is still being reconstructed 13 years after the flood. But what strikes you when you step inside the center is anything but gloominess, rather you pick up on something akin to thumbing one’s nose at adversity, recognizing the possibilities that turn a negative into a positive.
